Hi Dotty, I’m so sorry I’m only getting to read this post now – things have been mad. How wonderfully written, and every word is true. I also joined Twitter in June. My first love is FB (yes the Farmville etc are annoying but I just ignore all those games and application requests – sometimes I pretend that my FB a/c or PC is playing up and that I can’t accept them!) but I really love Twitter too. I’ve met some of my online friends as well as they’ve been just as lovely in “real life” as online. These social networking sites can really make a difference to one’s life. Most people are genuinely nice, and for those who aren’t, or who are more interested in being nosey than being friendly, well they are what “blocking” was invented for, lol. Your post is wonderful and yes, often online there is less of a sense of judgement. Thank you for posting this – it strikes such a chord with myself and many many others xxxx

I, too, joined in June. We found out that we arrived at the same time, remember?

I didn’t think that I would enjoy twittering and assumed I would stop after a week or so.

But in the shortest span of time, I found myself, among other things, in a community of writers who encouraged me to pick up the pen after a hiatus of many years.

I’m now writing stories again and going to submit them to magazines, etc.

I also have met many friends. And, yes, while I haven’t met any of these people in person, I have shared all the good, the bad, the sad, the joyful news of each.

And you’re correct in saying that twitter is a very real community of kind, generous, supportive people. I do love them.

As I love my dear friend That’s you!

Disillusioned by the Pet Societies, Farmvilles, Zoos and Mafia Wars of Facebook and the never-ending stream of gifts and invitations amongst the real communications I wanted to keep, I stepped over tentatively to the “other side”.

I actually was on Twitter first, but the point about Facebook is just as valid for me.

Enjoyed reading your post, all of which I can relate to! From ‘older’ members of my family I get comments like – isn’t it sad – what about ‘real’ friends – billy no mates – all of which I detest! I try to be patient and avoid conflict over their ignorance. I love the Twitter community that I have – they can support, make me laugh, and in return I hope I can do the same. xx

This is lovely – and so true. It always irks me to hear the put downs of the Twitter-haters, because they are always people who have refused to try it, or at best, have logged on, waited for something to happen, and logged out again. Twitter is like anything – you get out what you put in. Once I got the hang of it I threw myself into it and have won prizes, got work, made important contacts, found case studies for articles, discovered great websites, stores, and events, and most of all, made some fantastic friends. Some of whom are now friends in “real life”! Twitter is a brilliant tool, and as the world becomes faster, busier and harder to find a place in, it’s one of the best ways to meet like-minded people, and to be yourself. And how else would I have met @dottymummy?

I joined back in February and just like you I tweeted away the day telling people my daily routine.For quite a few months I had American and Canadian mums following me.But now I have followers from all over the world.A lot of them are also bloggers so there is a fairly close community.I too got bored off Facebook games.I wanted to chat and communicate with people not send virtual animals.I look for you in a bit and starting following you.I’m Alybean by the way.

A great post! I found Twitter through a friendly forum (yes there are some friendly forums out there) And my list of followers seemed to grow over night.
I love Twitter and echo everything you have said! It is a real community, and I wished more people tweeted so they “got it”.
